Echo Mountain
Lauren Wolk
'Harper Lee has a worthy successor. Wolk is a big new talent' The Times 'Lyrical, timeless . . . A luscious, shivery delight' Kirkus starred review 1933. When Ellie and her family lose everything, they flee to Echo Mountain to build a new life. Ellie runs wild, exploring the mountain's mysteries. But the one she can't solve is who's leaving the gifts for her: tiny, beautiful wooden carvings of animals and flowers, dotted around the mountain for her to find. Then Ellie's father has a terrible accident. Now he lies in a coma, while Ellie shoulders the blame for what happened. When she sets out to find a cure for him, she discovers Cate, the outcast witch, and Larkin, a wild mountain boy. From them she learns about being a healer, being brave - and about how there can be much more to a person than first meets the eye. An unforgettable novel from the award-winning author of Wolf Hollow and Beyond the Bright Sea. 'It is a magical thing to step into a world created by Wolk . . . Captivating' Booklist starred review 'Historical fiction at its finest' The Horn Book starred review

Adventurous it shows there is more than one way to be brave . My my favourite character is Larkin who he and his Mother are brave in there own way to overcome there grief . I am glad Larkin is making mandolins just like his Father it feels like he does this for Cate . I would recommend this book under categories real life , adventure and fiction. Being Brave doesn't always mean facing your fears ! Iloved this book

This is a really really good book and couldn`t put it down. I loved how I felt as if I was a character in it and could not stop thinking about the story. The way she wrote it made it all seem true and it seemed impossible that I wasn`t right there on Echo Mountain. It is defiantly one my favourite books ever.

I really liked this book which i had read once before. It's about a girl called Ellie who's father had been hit by a tree and was in a coma. She has to help the 'hag' Cate get better from a really bad wound. My favourite characters were Samuel and Quiet. I'd give this book 5 stars

I would definitely recommend this book because it shows how brutal life can be and also how you can power through the storm of challenges into the sunshine of accomplishment.

I really liked it because Ellie helped cate, Larkin and Her dad when they got hurt. The part I didn't like was when Ellie's father got hit by the tree.

"Echo Mountain" is an unforgettable novel from the award-winning author of Wolf Hollow and Beyond the sea.I truly enjoyed the other books and I loved this one.Lauren Wolk has tied together the strings of family, trust, friendship and history all into one single, amazing book.Newberry honoree Wolk continues to show her tremendous talent for using simple, elegant, poetic and vivid words to paint the picture for the readers of the book."Echo Mountain" is a story bringing to life the Great Depression(the financial crash-also the topic in her book,Wolf Hollow) in 1993, when Ellie's family and many others lose everything they have ,left to flee to Echo Mountain to build and start a new life. The story unravels around the main protagonist,Ellie begins the story by saving a pup,Quiet.A young heroine in Depression-era Maine navigates the rocky terrain of her new home, as she does she discovers true friends along the way. When they moved to the mountain,Ellie's father was diagnosed with coma, which meant Ellie herself had to do the jobs he did; she stops at no time to keep persevering that her father will wake up and become one of the family again. This is a very entertaining, thrilling and engaging book and I would highly recommend it for advanced - expert readers who prefer books by authors like Michael Morpurgo and books based on historical fiction. It kept me hooked till the end!As you progress through the book,Ellie discovers many things and becomes more mature nearer the end.Though the plot is interesting, there is not a typical story that lasts all the way throughout, it is about the same repetitive subject and not completely organised, compared to all of the other books I have read in my entire life. However, you can see the author has put a lot of effort in researching the topic of the financial crash and many other things, so giving a reasonable amount of credit for that,I would rate this book an overall of 4.5/5.Though to be honest, it isn’t my genre of book type.I would prefer a dystopian, crime or scientific genre(or even non-fictional types!).
