The Bacteria Book: Gross Germs, Vile Viruses, and Funky Fungi
Steve Mould
Shortlisted for the Royal Society Young People's Book Prize 2019 Meet the bacteria, viruses, and other germs and microbes that are all around, but too small for us to see, in this children's science book by bestselling author and science comedian Steve Mould. What do a squid that glows, fungus that grows, and tiny creatures in the soil under your toes all have in common? Find out in this dynamic and engaging book all about bacteria, viruses, and other germs and microbes. The Bacteria Book perfectly walks the line between ""ew, gross!"" and ""oh, cool!"", exploring why we need bacteria and introducing readers to its microbial mates: viruses, fungi, algae, archaea, and protozoa. The Bacteria Book is a fun and informative introduction to a STEAM subject that brings kids up-close to the big world of tiny science. With remarkable photography, kooky character illustrations, and lots of fun facts, this book uses real-life examples of microbiology in action to show how microbes keep our bodies and our world running.
Reviews
It's interesting because it is science and that is interesting for me.

This is an amazing book by steeve mould (ironic huh)? Anyway, this is a factual book about germs, bacteria and viruses. There are no characters but my favourite germ is chlorea. I do recommend this book.

The Bacteria book interested me because I like to learn and the book had lots of facts ( I like facts). I would recommend this book to someone else because it teaches you not just about germs, it also teaches about oil spills on one page but luckily bacteria clean it up.Also bacteria live in your tummy to help your food get digested.

It's quite freaky and i learned about bacteria, germs, viruses and fungi. I learned about hexagon shaped virus. When an unfamiliar virus enters your body your white blood cells aren't quite ready. The white blood cells learn the viruse's weaknesses and they fight the virus. I recomend it.

My favourite part is when it shows us how a very certain type of fungi (Ophiocordyceps) can make "zombie ants" when its spores land on an ant because it uses special chemicals to break into the ant's body and then, the the cells in the spore multiplies and start to take over the ants mind and its behaviour changes completely, soon, the spores will force the ant up a plant, then make it clamp down hard, this is where the ant dies, and it stays on the plant even after death! My least favourite part is when they show us how infection works, because when your skin is cut, bacteria can cause infections as they can pile inside so it just shows how strong our skin is, and how vunerable we would be without it as skin is like a shield that protects our body from germs that can cause, maybe even death. This book really interested me because of the pandemic, so I wanted to find out some facts about bacteria because of Covid-19 so I want to find out about recent discoveries of bacteria and this book made it fun to read because of all of the funny pictures. There are also lots of diagrams to show how everything works, or get into your body. It has good images of fungus, ants, a mouldy tomato and a few others. These facts are really interesting as I haven't heard of such things before I read this book. Its bright colours really captured my interest. I would recommend this book, definately.
