The uneasy balance between them is shattered when Starr is the only witness to the fatal shooting of her unarmed best friend, Khalil, by a police officer. Now what Starr says could destroy her community. It could also get her killed. Inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement, this is a powerful and gripping YA novel about one girl's struggle for justice.

This book is one of my favourite ever. It helps people discover their voices and to stand out for what's right and how racial inequality is still around in this world.

I loved this book so much that at certain parts I even started to cry. This book made me aware of the racism among the police force and that not many victims get the justice they deserve. This book sent a very powerful message and I think anyone who has read this would understand. This book was very touching and heartwarming at times too. This book also showed how gangs could be very dangerous at times and that people needed to tell the police if things got dangerous. I think this book is for older kids but it is very good

This is one of the best books I have ever Read. It’s so sad how they shot Kahalil for no reason. But i love that by the end of the book Starr found her voice.

So good to read a YA novel from a young, black, female perspective. Interesting as challenged for it's portrayal of the police and it's profanities - so a good book to introduce to students in September as part of 'Banned Books Week'. This novel was raw and relevant and a great novel from Angie Thomas which took a challenging topic and tackled the BLM movement head on. I loved it. And my students are very intrigued after watching the movie adaptation. Interesting to see how many of our girls of African and Caribbean descent are drawn to this novel. It's worth its weight in gold for them to read a book in their own voice.

An incredibly emotive book. Although I could not fully relate to issues the main characters were having to deal with, Thomas has written the novel in such an accessible way everyone who read's it is able to gain an insight into the pain black communities go through when one of their own is killed by police. It's a topic that has been spoken about at the dinner table for years and is still as relevant today. It is important to keep these conversations going, and through this book it enables the younger generation to join the discussions and form their own compassionate opinions.

I enjoyed reading the book. It was a book about racism in America. A person got shot and their friend (Starr) starts a campaign to get justice. These events still seem to be carrying in the real world, and hopefully one day, every human being will be let to live and enjoy their lives. I would recommend this book to my family and friends.

It was so interesting. It was based on a real life story and I loved Starr. I enjoyed how she never ever gave up, even in the hardest of times. I would recommend this book to people aged 12 and over because there are some inappropriate parts.

I thought it was a very deep and sad book but also a very inspiring book as it teaches you to fight for what is right. My favourite character was starr as she was going through a lot but still stood up for kahil and said the truth she also never gave up on kahil. I would recommend this to someone who never gives up on friends or family and Stands up for what is right.

An interesting exploration of contemporary issues of repression.

An excellent and topical read. It pulls no punches with Khalil being graphically shot dead in chapter 1 and the poison of gang violence woven throughout every page. Definitely would recommend.

What I like about this book is the way it expresses racial injustice and how people's voices need to be heard. The person I liked best was Starr, the main character because she always stays strong when things don't go well and she is perseverant. I would recommend it to teenagers.

I really like this book specifically because it is very original and inspiring. It recognizes the black lives matter movement before the protest even started. it combines both fiction and non fiction together and has enough detail to make in seem real.
