Ballerina Dreams
Michaela DePrince (Author), Ella Okstad
One windy day, a magazine blew down the road. I reached out and caught it. A pretty picture of a woman was on the front cover of the magazine. She wore a short pink dress that stuck out around her in a circle. She looked very happy. At the age of three, Michaela DePrince found a photo of a ballerina that changed her life. She was living in an orphanage in Sierra Leone at the time, but was soon adopted by a family and brought to America. Michaela never forgot the photo of the dancer she once saw, and decided to make her dream of becoming a ballerina come true. She has been dancing ever since, and after a spell as a principal dancer in New York, now dances for the Dutch National Ballet in Amsterdam. Beautifully and gently illustrated by Ella Okstad, Ballerina Dreams is the younger-reader edition of Michaela DePrince's highly moving memoir, Hope in a Ballet Shoe.

I really liked that Mia didn’t make fun of the girls spots. The best part was when Mia and Michaela became sister. I would recommend it to everyone I know. 10/10

I thought it was fiction. It wasn’t fiction. It was real but I don’t like anyone. It is factual and it interresed me because it’s a ballerina. Yes because it’s nice.

This book is about an orphaned girl, Michaela, whose parents died in the ongoing war in Sierra Leone. She gets adopted by a lady who has hair the colour of daisies. Her best friend Mia also gets adopted. One windy day at the orphanage, a magazine blows through the open doors and on the front cover is a picture of a woman looking very happy, dancing ballet. Michaela, gets this magazine and wishes and dreams of being like this woman. When she's adopted she begins ballet lessons and her favourite step is the jete. She makes her way into the Nutcracker and soon she is on television. When she was 8 years old she twisted her left ankle during a dancing competition but despite that she got a scholarship. Many children ask her how she got this amazing and she says it begins with one step, if you practice every day, you can achieve what you wish to do.
