The Astounding Broccoli Boy
Frank Cottrell-Boyce, Steven Lenton
The Astounding Broccoli Boy is the hilarious tale of an unlikely (and very green) hero believing in himself and finding adventure. Written by the award-winning UK Children's Laureate 2024–2026, Frank Cottrell-Boyce and illustrated throughout by Steven Lenton. Perfect for children aged 8+. Green by day, hero by night! Rory Rooney likes to be prepared for all eventualities. His favourite book is Don't Be Scared, Be Prepared, and he has memorized every page of it. He could even survive a hippo attack. He knows that just because something is unlikely doesn't mean it won't ever happen . . . But Rory isn't prepared when he suddenly and inexplicably turns green. Stuck in an isolation ward in a hospital far from home with two other remarkably green children, Rory's as confused by his new condition as the medics seem to be. What if turning green actually means you've turned into a superhero? Rory can't wait to make it past hospital security and discover exactly what his superpower might be . . . 'Brilliantly funny, believable and very human' - The Bookseller 'A funny, silly and underlyingly serious story about self-belief . . . and the value of being nice to people' - The Sunday Times

A great book which is full of adventure especially the part when they found a new member of their society. My favourite person I liked the the best was Koko . It interest me because it was silly and funny in a good way. I would recommend it to my friend Amelia.

The main character, Rory Rooney, is the best because he has cool abilities - I won't say any more! If I could change one thing, I would make there be more funny comments - there are plenty already, but Frank Cottrell-Boyce is great at jokes! I would recommend it to people who love Jamie Smart books and other funny Phoenix writers.

I think it’s a funny and exciting book and I would recommend it. My favourite part was when they let the animals out of the zoo and when the hippo had a fight with the freezer.

This was a hilarious story about a boy who turns green one day and believes he has super heroic powers (although the Killer Kitten virus and locked down London are weirdly prophetic given the present pandemic!) Rory, the main character, lives his life using advice from the book ‘Don’t be scared, be prepared’, and he has many uses for it in this action packed story. I would recommend it to any 7+ year old who loves a super hero story ( and a chuckle).

Another amazing book by Frank Cottrell-Boyce. It talks about a boy, Rorey Rooney, turning green! Nobody knows why, but he thinks he's a super hero. Its a really enthralling and funny story, all the characters have a personality which makes you remember them, and some have really funny personalities. It's a funny, amazing book and I strongly recommend it. There's even a little penguin!
