Up on the chalk downs they call The Wold, witches are banned, but as all witches know, chalk's no good for magic anyway. Nine-year-old Tiffany Aching thinks her Granny Aching might have been a witch, but since she's dead it's up to Tiffany to work it all out when strange things begin happening. Ages 12+.

Reviews

The person I liked most was Tiffany Aching because she's smart but silly at the same time. She's also a bit complex to understand. The Wee Free Men are very silly and stupid, but ferocious and loyal all at the same time. I would recommend it as a ridiculously funny book. For me, it lost a star because there were some scary bits and there were also some complex bits that were more difficult to understand.

I really enjoyed reading this twisty tale. A nine year old girl, Tiffany Aching, lives on a farm. When she finds out she's a witch, her life changes completely. She meets the Wee Free Men, a funny bunch of tiny, blue people. Together they enter the world of the Queen, an evil icy person. Will they be able to get out again? I would really recommend this book, it's funny and full of dreams.

This is a great book for all fans of fantasy and witchcraft type books. I would recommend it. My fav character is Tiffany, who is a witch. She is the kind and confident main character of the series containing the Wee free men. When Tiffany Aching*, the granddaughter of famous Granny Aching, is at first glad when she misses the call of ''Wanna Wanna Sweetie!'' from her annoying brother Wentworth, but soon realises how much he means to her when he goes missing. So, Tiffany, sets off to find Wentworth with a top class weapon, well, a frying pan, and her spell book, ok, its Diseases Of The Sheep, to save her brother. Little did she know of the great dangers lying ahead... Crivens!** The first in the amazing series by one of my favourite authors Terry Pratchett. *See my fav character **Oh, and she gets help from the Nac Mac Feegles (The Wee Free Men) whether she wants it or not.

I really liked this book. It was all about Tiffany Aching (a 9 year old girl) travelling to fairy land to rescue her brother from the evil queen. She has help from the wee free men and has to fight lots of monsters along the way. I would definitely recommend it.

Terry Pratchett's command of language and a ability to draw nuanced, humourous portraits of humanity are almost unparalleled. This is the story of a girl who doesn't need to be rescued. It is the story of a brace, proud and headstrong girl who is making her own future. This, on its own, is a reason to read it to and with your daughters (and sons!). There are some dark moments and some challenging language and themes, even as an adult reader, so I would recommend this for mature, confident UKS2 children, or KS3 and above. Some parts of this book will stay with me for a long time, and I will likely come back to it for a reread in the not too distant future.
